Getting to Madrid is easy as all major European carriers and most low-cost airlines fly there, and some great deals are available. Public transport in Madrid is fantastic compared to most other cities in
Europe. There is an extensive underground (the Metro) which covers most of the city, comprehensive (and frequent) bus routes (with dedicated bus lanes), superb local trains, and reasonably-priced taxis. And it's all cheap, clean, efficient and runs until late! With all this available, the mind boggles why so many madrileños choose to use their cars for even the shortest journey, resulting in severe congestion at peak times, despite the road system being well-planned and the major arteries wide.
