Katowice is a large industrial town in the south west of Poland, famed for its pollution and ugliness. Due to the amount of mining that went on around there, all the buildings are black with grime and the pollution was

once so bad it was said that the locals had mutated to cope with it and actually got sick if they went somewhere cleaner! Due to the demise of much of the industry of the area the air is cleaner, but its still not pretty to look at. Particular eyesores are the Rynek (main square) and the train station. I was there for a year, and had a whale of a time, though.
