Birmingham is a fairly safe city to live in or visit, despite having the problems you might expect from any major city. The council has worked hard to reduce car crime, burglary and

theft, with the result that the city centre is now a much safer place to walk around, even at night.  having said that, there has been a worrying rise in gun crime, with one notorious shooting of two young girls attracting nationwide attention. This does tend to be confined to certain neighbourhoods, however.
